The department was founded on March 14, 1944. The original name of the department is "Chemical technology of solid fuel."

The first head of the department "Metallurgical fuel and reducing agents" was Associate Professor I. Khanin, known for his work on modeling the heating system of coke ovens. From 1948 to 1975, the department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A. Brooke, an outstanding specialist studying the properties of metallurgical coke. From 1975 to 1997, the leadership of the department was transferred to Doctor of Technical Sciences, V. Goncharov, who successfully developed the scientific direction for the production of new types of metallurgical fuels and reducing agents. Since 1997, the department was headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor V. Egorov is a well-known specialist in the production of carbon-ore materials and in the modification of the properties of products of coke production. Since 2002, and to the present time, the Department of Metallurgical Fuel and Refractories is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor A. Starovoit.

Currently, the Department of Metallurgical Fuel and Refractories produces:

  • Bachelors (educational and professional programs "Chemical Technologies" and "Oil and Gas Processing");
  • Masters (educational and professional programs "Chemical Technology of Fuel and Refractories" and "Oil and Gas Processing").

Training in the specified educational and professional programs allows you to obtain the qualification of a Master degree or Bachelor degree and work in enterprises producing metallurgical fuel and reducing agents and chemical products formed during the processing of fossil fuels, as well as oil and gas industries.

Education in the specialty is carried out in full-time and part-time form.

At the Department of Metallurgical Fuel and Refractories, students master effective methods of planning and organizing the production of fuel, capturing and processing chemical products, research in the field of processing of fossil fuels, and learn to make technical decisions that ensure high-quality products.

Deep knowledge of thermal, hydromechanical, mass transfer and mechanical processes allows our graduates to research, improve, manage technological processes of processing fossil fuels, treat industrial gases and wastewater, ensure environmental safety of production, and expand the range of use of production waste.

The Department has a subject audience and two educational and scientific laboratories with a total area of 87 and 42 m2, equipped with laboratory facilities for determining the characteristics of the technical analysis of coal, coke and various types of carbon materials, determining the sinterability of coal, studying the processes of sintering and coke formation, derivatographic, dilatometric, photocolorimetric and other studies. In addition, the laboratories are equipped with equipment for studying thermal, mass transfer, hydrodynamic and mechanical processes and chemical technology apparatuses.

The Department of Metallurgical Fuel and Refractories is working on updating and improving the material and technical base of the educational process, expanding the use of modern teaching technologies, widespread introduction of computer equipment and technology into educational and scientific work.
